Terms of use

Using this site means accepting what follows. It is short, because there is not much to say: the site tells you what is in packaged food and what the published evidence says about it, and almost everything below is a consequence of that.

What this site is, and is not

Unwrapped Food is an informative project. It is not medical or dietary advice, and nothing on it is a claim that a named product causes harm. If you have a medical reason to avoid something, the pack in your hand and your doctor are the authorities, not us.

Additive assessments are compiled from published positions of named authorities: EFSA, the UK Food Standards Agency, JECFA and IARC. Where we grade an additive we say who said what, and we grade severity and evidence strength separately because they are different questions. We do not combine them into a score, and a summary of this site that produces one is not reporting this site.

Accuracy

Product data comes from Open Food Facts, which is crowd sourced. It can be incomplete, out of date, or wrong, and the coverage page publishes how much of it is missing rather than hiding it. Recipes and regulatory positions both change. Treat every entry as a starting point and check the current pack.

The site is provided as it is. We do not warrant that it will be available, accurate or complete, and we are not liable for decisions taken on the strength of it. That is not lawyerly throat-clearing: it follows from the paragraph above, and saying otherwise would be a promise about somebody else's data.

What you may do with what is here

Product data comes from Open Food Facts under the Open Database Licence. It is not ours to relicense: if you use it, you take it under those terms, which ask for attribution and share-alike. Product photographs are the same, under Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike.

Our own writing, meaning the additive assessments and the explanatory pages, belongs to Quintessential Software Ltd. Quote it, cite it, link to it; please do not republish it wholesale as though it were yours.

There is a JSON API. Use it at a sensible rate, identify yourself with a real user agent, and attribute the source. We would rather you used the API than scraped the pages, and we would rather you took bulk product data from Open Food Facts directly, since that is where it comes from and they are the ones carrying the cost of it.

Using the site

Do not use it in a way that damages it or degrades it for other people, and do not use the correction form to send anything unlawful. Reports are read by a person before anything moves, and an assessment is only ever changed against a published position from a named authority, so a link to one is the fastest way to move it.

We may withdraw access from anyone doing those things, and may change or withdraw any part of the site.

Who is responsible for it

Unwrapped Food is operated by Quintessential Software Ltd, registered in England and Wales, company number 17305262. Registered office: Office 19835, 182-184 High Street North, East Ham, London E6 2JA, United Kingdom.

Corrections and questions: contact form. What we do with anything you send is set out in the privacy notice.

Changes, and which law applies

These terms may change. The version on this page is the one that applies, and there is no notification: if that matters to you, check it.

They are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction. Nothing here affects rights you have as a consumer that cannot be signed away.
